Zhao Wenqi (Chinese: ; born 1963) is a Chinese marine biologist. He was one of the first scientists to work on whale search.html">research in China.
Zhao graduated from Ocean University of China and received his Ph.D. degree from Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. After that, he worked at the South Sea Fisheries Research Institute in Guangzhou for several years before joining the National Oceanic Administration (currently known as State Oceanic Administration) in 1992. He has been working on research projects concerning whale, dolphin and other marine mammals.html">mammals in China since then.
In 2008, he worked at the Third Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration. His current position is Senior Researcher at the Marine Mammal Laboratory of the Third Institute of Oceanography. Zhao Wenqi has been leading research projects concerning whale migration and conservation in South China Sea since 2004. He also participated in several national key scientific research projects on marine biology and management.
Zhao Wenqi has published numerous papers on whale, dolphin and other marine mammals in Chinese and international journals. He is currently an editor of the Journal of Mammalogy (Chinese Edition), and a member of the editorial board of many academic journals, including Marine Biodiversity Research, Journal of Fish Biology, and Mammal Study. Zhao has been teaching courses concerning wildlife management, conservation biology, and animal ecology in several universities since 2000.
On August 2, 2016, Chinese National Radio Channel One reported on the whale research project led by Professor Zhao Wenqi on their program called "Science News" (Chinese: ). The report said that Zhao was working with his team to monitor and protect marine mammals in South China Sea. It also mentioned Zhao''s research on whales'' migration route and feeding behavior, as well as his conservation efforts for endangered species.
